‘The Telegraphe (sic)’, c. 1795.

Object Description

Engraving and letterpress showing a ‘machine for conveying intelligence with wonderful quickness as used by the French’. Beneath an engraving of a telegraph similar to the Chappe telegraph system invented by Claude Chappe d'Auteroche (1763-1805), is an explanation of the different permutations of signal which can be given using the different positions of three inter linked wooden arms on a vertical fixed pole.
