Connecting the dots

To make efficient use of renewable energy, an EU-wide internal market is needed.

Prior, only regional coupled networks and markets existed. To overcome the issues that were still present with these regional markets and networks (e.g., the volatile energy prices) in a top-down manner, the EU wants to create an EU-wide internal energy market.

This internal energy market has three goals: security of supply, competitiveness and sustainability. The object shows the press conference Energising Europe: A real market with secure supply given in September of 2007. In this conference the European Commission announced that it adopted a legislative framework that would ensure that these goals were to be realized.

This top-down initiative from the EU resulted in a bottom-up response; the chief executive officers of 42 European transmission system operators from 34 countries met in Brussels in December of 2008 to create a new association (in anticipation of the legislative framework of the EU coming into force): the European Network of Transmission  System  Operators  for  Electricity (ENTSO-E).

By the coupling of the regional networks into an EU-wide network, ENTSO-E tries to contribute to further standardization of (renewable) electricity supply in Europe by establishing network codes for security of supply, competitiveness and sustainability on an EU-wide scale.

Connecting Renewable Europe

Because of EU regulations and public opinion, energy companies are forced to incorporate more renewable energy in their grids. To achieve this goal, offshore wind farms are built with the knowledge of companies from different countries. To get this energy to the consumer without the need to put renewable production on hold, both a European power grid and market are needed.
