The first transatlantic TV picture from space, 1962.

Object Description

'Transatlantic television came to Britain yesterday via the American TV space satellite Telstar. People throughout the country stayed up to watch as Fred Kappel, chairman of the American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, broadcasted from across the Atlantic Ocean. Viewers shared drama with technicians at the GPO station at Goonhilly Down, Cornwall, as first the satellite was lost, then found again at the last minute, but it was a triumph of technical achievement and it culminated a night of waiting on BBC and ITV.'
