Object Description

Poster produced for the Southern Railways (SR) to promote daily train and air services between Heston Airport, London and the Isle of Wight, Hampshire, a journey which took 40 minutes. The poster shows an aeroplane descending down toward the Isle of Wight, the coastline of which is visible amidst an expanse of sea. Artwork by Charles Pears (1873-1958), a marine painter in oil who was an Official Naval Artist during the World Wars. He worked as a poster artist for rail companies and other clients and was also a book illustrator.
