Object Description
In 1953, één jaar nadat de Comet voor het publiek toegankelijk was, waren er al twee fatale ongelukken gebeurd met in totaal 49 slachtoffers. De omstandigheden waren verschillend, maar de oorzaak helder. Er volgden aanpassingen aan de vleugels en het controlesysteem. Bovendien werden de trainingen voor piloten aangescherpt.
Maar het jaar later in 1954 toen de Comet II alweer in de lucht was, kwam er weer een fataal incident. Een Comet was in de zee gestort met als resultaat dat er 35 mensen waren omgekomen, waarvan 10 kinderen.
Deze grote klap voor Europa en Groot-Brittannië was te merken, vooral omdat de oorzaak hiervan niet duidelijk was. Er werden wat aanpassingen gemaakt en na anderhalve maand vloog de Comet weer. Maar het mocht niet lang duren, want nog datzelfde jaar explodeerde de Comet in de lucht. Op dat moment greep Winston Churchill in.

In 1953, one year after the public launch of the Comet, there already were two fatal accidents with in total 49 casualties. The circumstances were different but the cause was clear. Some modifications followed to the wings and the control systems. And the trainings for the pilots became stricter.
But one year later, in 1954, when the Comet II already flew high in the sky, there was another fatal accident. A Comet crashed in the sea with everyone, 35 people, killed of which ten of them were children.
This huge blow for Europe and Great Britain was noticeable, especially because the cause of the accident wasn’t clear. Again some modifications were applied and one and a half month later the Comet flew again. But it couldn’t last too long. In the same year the Comet exploded in the air. Then Winston Churchill intervened.
