Helicopter Bell 47J

Object Description

Bell lanserte modell 47 i 1946.

Description (English)

From the beginning of the 1900s, there was interest in making aircraft that could take off and land without a runway. The crucial breakthrough came in the interwar period. One of the major manufacturers was the Bell Aircraft Corporation. Bell launched the Model 47 in 1946.This was the first helicopter in the world that was approved for regular civilian traffic. Several versions of the Bell 47 helicopters were made. They were used in the Korean War (1950-53). The helicopters were a new element in modern warfare. They conducted rescue and supply missions also behind the opponents' lines. Helicopter traffic came to Norway with the firm Helicopter Service, which was founded in 1956. Three helicopters of the type 47J Ranger were ordered. The main activity in the early years was the development projects and map measurements in mountainous areas.Another task was the demonstration and training for the military. The helicopters were early used in both civilian and military rescue, with the stationing of Tromsø, Bodø, Bergen and Oslo. The major growth period for the Norwegian helicopter traffic came in relation to oil production in the North Sea from the beginning of the 1970s. In 1971 this was the first helicopter stationed in the North Sea. It transported the personnel during the construction of Ekofisk.
